Welcome to Middle School English Language Arts

About Me

Hello Scholars and Families,
I am Rhonda Eaton, and I have the privilege of teaching. I have enjoyed 8 years teaching middle school ELA at SJP to grades 5-8. Writing is my habit of choice, so teaching others to love what I love is paying it forward!

My love for writing and literature drives me in all areas of education. My undergraduate degree in English, with a concentration in writing, was earned through Bridgewater State University. I earned my MFA in Writing from Southern New Hampshire University. I also have my SEI Endorsement from Emmanuel College. I am certified to teach English grades 5-8. Prior to my work with scholars in Dorchester, I worked in Avon Public Schools. While there, I trained as a trainer through the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center in anti-bullying techniques and recognizing signs of cyberbullying. I have been honored with an Enterprise Teacher of the Year, Principal's Award for Dedication To Literacy, and 2017 Yawkey Award. I love teaching middle school!!

Modeled after an invitation-only event at Bridgewater State University, I conduct an Authors' Cafe 2-3 times annually in which our talented scholar authors will share their works in the evening before standing-room-only audiences. I love to incorporate writing in all content areas. The stronger our young people are in varied areas of communication, the more successful they will become. I believe writing builds confidence in communication! Mad Lib, anyone?

I have been married to my prom date for 35 years, and we have two daughters, an amazing son-law, and a five year old grandson. We also have 2 fur babies, Golden Retrievers named Abby and Melody. We love to vacation in North Conway, New Hampshire.

Announcements and Info

Hello Families and Scholars! Welcome to my Announcements Page!

Here you will find upcoming events and useful information and updates!

  • Authors' Cafe is this week for all grades. I will be sending home the Zoom links; they are the same ones the students have been using for my classes all year.
  • 1/25/2021: Wow! Nice work staying focused with your weeks of testing! I am proud of your accomplishments.
  • 1/25/2021: Now it's time for progress reports to this week. Remember this is a time stamp for where we are at this time.
  • MAP Testing begins the week we return from break. I have stressed with my scholars how important it is that they focus on doing well on their tests. We played  Chat Box Trivia as a way of reviewing language skills. Grade 8 will be reviewing with me in person that week. Please have your child in school, whether in person or on Zoom, on a regular basis. Let's begin the new year full steam ahead!
  • Greetings! We are rapidly approaching Christmas break; can you believe it?  6 and 8 have completed their first novel of the year: grade 6 read I Am Malala; grade 8 read MAUS. Grade 7 is half way through a very lengthy, but worthwhile read: The Book Thief. We should have completed the novel by the time we return from break as the students will read it through their break. All grades will begin a second novel in the middle of January.
  •  Grades 6 and 8 have been preparing for their novel tests on December 9th. They received a study guide, which we reviewed in class. Students were encouraged to take notes in their reading notebook or to write, directly, on their study guide. These tools, along with their novel will be utilized during the test. Ask your child about their study guide!
  •  We are also planning for an Authors' Cafe during Catholic Schools Week at the end of January. This is an old tradition of mine, and I've been trying to come up with a way to make it work under our unique conditions. Usually, students and guests come to my classroom in the evening for a writing share and enjoy some juice and snacks. Students are invited to select 1 or 2 pieces of graded writing to share. It's always standing room only! Teachers come, too! I will hold the even on Zoom over two separate dates: one for both grade 6 classes; one for grades 7 and 8. Of course, parents will be welcome to support their children with our traditional snap, snap, clap! It will be BYOS (bring your own snacks).
  •  God Bless you all, and Happy New Year!
